Bottle Gourd Farming – Varieties
Following are some popular varieties of bottle gourd.
Punjab Barkat: It has long fruits, are light green in colour and are bottle type in shape. The variety is commonly resistant to mosaic disease. The yield production of this variety is high.
Punjab Long: It has cylindrical, shining and light green colour fruits. Therefore, it has good long-distance marketing ability. It produces an average production of 180 QTL/acre.
Punjab Komal: It is a quick maturing variety that gets mature in 70 days after sowing. It has medium-sized, light green in colour fruits and bears 10 -12 fruits/vine. It produces an average yield of 200 QTL/acre.
Punjab Bahar: It has round shape fruits and is green in colour. It produces an average yield of 222 QTL/acre.
Round varieties: Pusa Manjri, Pusa Summer Prolific Round and Punjab Round are the prime varieties in round bottle gourd cultivated in Himachal Pradesh.
You can cultivate bottle gourd in well-prepared land. First, you have to harrow and plough the field to bring it to a fine tilth. Now, you have to free the field from the weed and other things. Purpose of Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria 2 kg/ha and Pseudomonas 3 kg/ha along with Farmyard fertiliser 50 kg and neem cake of 100 kg before the last turning needed.
Bottle Gourd – Harvesting
Depending upon quality and season, the crop is ready for gathering in 60-70days. Then, depending upon market requirements, medium and soft fruits are harvested. Mature results primarily collected for seed production purposes. Cut the fruits from vines with the help of a fine knife. In peak season, picking should do every 3-4 days.
Post-Harvest for Bottle gourd
Keep separation distance of 800m from other kinds of sponge gourd. Remove diseased weeds from the field. For seed stock, the fruits collected when they get physiologically ready.
