Schedule an X-Ray at xranm for Quick and Convenient Access to Diagnostic Imaging
When you need to schedule an X-ray, it can be inconvenient to schedule a doctor’s appointment and then go in to the hospital or clinic for the test, only to sit around until your name is called. Fortunately, at Deaconess Locations in New Mexico, you can schedule an X-ray online or by phone so that you can skip the waiting room and head straight into the exam room when you arrive at the hospital or clinic. Here’s how to do it.
What is an X-ray?
An X-ray is a diagnostic imaging test that uses high-energy waves to produce pictures of the inside of your body. The images are produced by a machine called an X-ray machine, which produces a beam of high-energy waves that pass through your body. The waves are absorbed by dense tissues, such as bones, and create shadows on film or a digital image receptor. This allows your doctor to see problems in areas such as your bones, teeth and chest.

What should I bring to my appointment?
You should bring your insurance information and a photo ID. You may also need to provide a referral from your doctor. If you have had x-rays taken before, please bring them with you or have them sent to us in advance. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment. Upon arrival, we will take your weight and height. We will also ask you about any medications you are taking that might interfere with the x-ray images. Finally, we will ask about any medical conditions such as heart disease that might cause problems with the test. Once these items are collected, we can perform the procedure and send it back to our radiologist for analysis. They will then contact you if they find anything wrong during their examination of the images.
What happens after my x-ray appointment?
Your x-ray will be read by a radiologist, who is a doctor specially trained to interpret diagnostic images. The radiologist will send a report of their findings to your primary care doctor or the doctor who referred you for the x-ray. Your doctor will then discuss the results with you and develop a treatment plan, if necessary. In some cases, further testing may be recommended. For example, if there is any question about how much cartilage remains in the joints (such as those between your vertebrae), an MRI may be recommended. Other conditions such as tumors can also be detected on x-rays.
Some patients experience discomfort when they have an x-ray due to increased pressure in the area being imaged or because they need sedation medication to keep them still during the procedure. These side effects are usually short term and limited only to the region being imaged but they should be considered before scheduling an appointment.
Doctors recommend that children under 6 months old not have a chest x-ray unless there are unusual symptoms present.
